Letter from the Director

Thank you for visiting the website of the Serve DC office, formerly known as the DC Commission on National and Community Service. We appreciate your interest in the activities of Serve DC and hope you'll find the information here useful.

The DC Commission on National and Community Service was established by an Executive Order of the Mayor. The commission is one of 51 such bodies nationwide promoting volunteerism and overseeing national service programs in states across the country.

In April of 2004, we changed our public name to Serve DC to better reflect our mission. The mission of Serve DC is to strengthen and promote the District of Columbia's spirit of service through partnerships, national service and volunteerism. We accomplish our mission by enhancing the education of the community's youth, improving citizen safety and neighborhood emergency preparedness and strengthening the community through service.

We encourage you to peruse our website to find out more about the initiatives we are leading or participating in to make DC a better place to live, work and visit. Consider nominating a volunteer for the Mayor's Community Service Award, which is given each month to one youth and one adult. Join us for one of our Seasons of Service Days such as Make a Difference Day or Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Read about our State Service Plan and our AmeriCorps programs. Sign up for one of our Citizen Corps volunteer programs to learn valuable emergency preparedness training. There are many ways for you to serve your country, serve your community and Serve DC.

Please contact us if you have any questions or suggestions.
